In the 1980s and 1990s, the cop buddy movie came into its own and it remains a movie favorite today. The Fast & Furious movies themselves led the way to more ensemble action style movies and it seems that the latest spin-off may combine the two genres.
Apparently, the reason that the latest movie became a cop buddy style romp is because Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson don’t really get on that well.
Vin Diesel has been a key part of the Fast & Furious franchise so some fans might not like the fact that he is not in this latest outing. Recently Dwayne Johnson gave some insight into why the changes have been made
Art Imitates Life?
In the previous Fast & Furious movies Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw played by Johnson and Jason Statham, really dislike each other and in this sequel, the two men are forced to work together to fight back against a cyber-terrorist.
Some fans have drawn parallels to the real-life relationship between Johnson and Diesel.
On the surface the guys certainly seemed to be hitting it off on set, however, in reality, they often did not see things the same way.
According to Mashable, Diesel was pretty friendly to everyone so it may be that the problem initiated with Johnson who apparently posted a comment on Instagram calling Diesel a “candy-ass”.
By contrast, Johnson and Statham seemed to really hit it off; the on-screen chemistry soon translated into a close off-set friendship. This is probably what led to Johnson making the spin-off with the two characters.
Having the two guys really hate each other at the get-go is a throwback to the cop buddy movies of the past like Lethal Weapon and 48 hours when the heroes often started from a base of antagonism leading to some great one-liners and comedy moments.
It is likely that Hobbs & Shaw will follow the tradition and although die-hard Fast & Furious fans may have preferred the full ensemble, they are likely to show up to this latest offering and there will be plenty to keep them happy.
Dwayne Johnson is a box office draw on his own so it is likely that his own fans will be keen to see the movie, maybe spurring them on to become fans of the entire franchise.
There will undoubtedly be lots of references and in-jokes for Fast & Furious fans and the name is included in the title of the film.
Fast & Furious 9 is on its way too with filming already started. No matter why Hobbs & Shaw ended up together in this particular outing, all the originals will be back together again soon.
It remains to be seen whether Hobbs and Toretto (Vin Diesel’s character) meet up and immediately go their own separate way in a mirror to their real-life relationship.
