When you were younger, did you ever have a partner in your life who you just presumed was going to be with you until the end? Until someone else got involved – family, another person – and ruined it all?
It’s a common story. Many people always wonder “what if?” about that person – where would things have gone if they had stayed together?
Prentiss Wilson and Janice Rude first met in 1961,and it was an instant hit. She was taking on her sophomore year at Occidental College, LA, while Prentiss was a freshman. Right away, he spotted Janice and that was it – he knew that he had to try and get her attention. He’d arrive at 6AM for food, just to try and make her see him.
“I actually didn’t think I had a chance with her. She was a year ahead of me and just so beautiful,” Willson explained. Well, mate, you were wrong.
He never turned up for the Thanksgiving dinner at the college café, and Janice was determined to know why. She got his details, and made her way over to his house to find out why he wasn’t there. Very quickly, they hit it off and in jig time they were together – and even engaged. Sadly, her father had no time for Prentiss and threatened to end paying for her education if she wouldn’t leave him.
Desperate to get her degree, they broke up and said their goodbyes broken-hearted – for now.
In the late 90s, both of their mothers sadly passed on a few months from one another. When going through old belongings, a few strange trinkets and items turned up that rekindled a few old memories. Both mothers had kept a notice of the original engagement notice from the two kids! It had stayed in Janice’ mothers’ wallet for close to 40 years.
A few years ago, they got back in touch with one another and decided to go for brunch. As you might imagine, they hit it off once again and, as Prentiss said “The mothers simply knew, and I think we also knew.”
They were so smitten all over again that on 2012 they got married on the Occidental campus – amazing, right?
As we know, the world works in very odd ways and it throws up some very strange coincidences that we simply cannot put our finger on. This is one of the most perfect examples of that. It might be a bit later than they thought, and we daresay they wish they had spent all those years together, but it’s amazing that they get to make up for lost time!
