One of the worst aspects of being a delivery driver in the modern world is the need to be so worried about your own safety. Despite doing a good job and helping people get items delivered to their door, some scumbags like to prey on those who are just doing a professional service.
When one recent Deliveroo driver was jumped and attacked by a gang of louts in London, it sounded like yet another harrowing tale of someone being battered for just doing their job.
However, riding in on his white steed and shiny armor was none other than Benedict Cumberbatch of Avengers, and so many other things, fame. The actor, 41, seen the main being attacked and intervened, having seen the delivery driver hit with a bottle across the skull.
While onlookers were quick to praise him as a hero of sorts, the ever-modest actor was quick to deny himself such accolades, saying: ‘There are real-life heroes out there and I’m not one of them,’
Despite throwing himself into the fray to try and get the attackers off the man, Cumberbatch was quick to make it clear that he isn’t necessarily a hero. We disagree, though; many people simply stand back and watch with horror, maybe throwing a few disapproving comments from the safety of the sidewalk. Others do even worse, and just record the bloody incident.
For someone like Cumberbatch who, forgive the assumption, hardly looks the fighting type, to cast aside his own fears of what could take place and just wade on in is hugely impressive. It’s one of those things; we all like to think we’d step in when duty calls, but would we?
Well, as he made his way down Marylebone High Street, London, alongside his wife, Sophie Hunter. When they witnessed the poor man being attacked, the brave actor stepped in to try and put an end to the needless assault.
A driver, Manuel Dias, said: ‘Benedict was courageous, brave and selfless. If he hadn’t stepped in the cyclist could have been seriously injured.
‘He stood there shouting at them in the street, shouting, “Leave him alone”.’
Cumberbatch then grabbed one of the men, and they soon fled upon realizing who they were dealing with, I mean who wants to fight Dr. Strange?
Deliveroo themselves were quick to tweet out their thanks to the top man, saying: “Thank you, Benedict Cumberbatch, for your brave actions,
‘Deliveroo riders are heroes – their safety is our priority and any violence against them is totally unacceptable. So on behalf of everyone at Deliveroo: thank you.”
Pretty cool, right? I’ll admit to always presuming that Benedict looked very much like the kind of guy who would never intervene, merely tut as he walked on past. Shows you what I know, right? Well done, Mr. Cumberbatch; you’ve got balls of steel as well as a unique gift.
