List: 5 Foods to Avoid If You Have Anxiety

Anxiety is a type of panic attack in which there is an intense fear that arises and lasts for a short period of time. Some individuals may experience more anxiety than others. You may not have known it, but anxiety can be exaggerated by certain types of foods and drinks. We have compiled a list of a few foods that trigger anxiety, so you must avoid them if you are prone to anxiety.

Caffeine

Various drinks contain caffeine such as coffee, tea, coke and etc. by drinking them the nervous system is alerted for some time and people suffering from anxiety may find themselves having shortness of breath and their heart may start racing according to Canadian Mental Health Association. A psychologist named, Norman B. Schmidt, Ph.D. said, “If you tend to be a high-strung, anxious person, using high doses of caffeine can be risky”.

Further research on this topic was done and Roland Griffiths, Ph.D. he spoke in an interview and enlightened with the information that caffeine can worsen the symptoms of anxiety such as, headache, uneven heartbeat and nervousness.

Alcohol

Often people turn to alcohol for comfort when they face anxiety. National Center for Biotechnology states that instead of reducing anxiety, alcohol will prolong the symptoms of anxiety. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America talks about people with social anxiety. 20% of people with social anxiety also face alcohol abuse. It is advised that people who suffer from social anxiety should avoid consumption of alcohol.

Sugar

A senior clinic director of Cole Natural Health Centers carried out a search and found out that high levels of serotonin in the bloodstream can cause anxiety to get high. One of the major food in our diet which is sugar contains serotonin. Serotonin can also be a lead cause of social anxiety. To test this theory 18 patients with social anxiety and 19 healthy people were recruited. All of them went under a PET scan. Results proved that the people who had serotonin in their body were the patients who were suffering from social anxiety.

Trans Fats

You might have heard the word trans-fat and if not that, you must have heard hydrogenated fat, well both of them are the same. Tran’s fats are bad for human health and might cause mood swings. They increase the risk of depression as they inflamate endothelial cells. 12 thousand Spanish university graduates who had no signs of depression were followed by researchers. They examined their diet for a period of time and concluded that 48% of those who took in Trans fats had a high risk of depression.

Gluten

Taking in gluten causes a certain type of disease in some people which is called celiac disease. It is found by PubMed that the disease is also associated with depression. As compared to a control group, elderly people who were gluten sensitive were also prone to depression.
