Many middle school mothers are extremely grateful for one North Carolina mother’s funny PSA on Facebook the other week. She uncovered the secret of the disappearing scrunchies, explaining how they have become the most recent sign of a tween girl liking a boy.
Apparently, Emily Covington was having a hard time understanding why these girly scrunchies were turning up all over her house ever since her son returned to school this year, reported Good Morning, America.
“One week there were all these scrunchies in the dryer. The first batch, I didn’t think anything of and tossed them in the trash thinking it was a fluke or maybe even mine that I forgot,” Covington told the outlet.
But the next time it happened, she asked her son about it.
The young boy explained to his mother that scrunchies are the current hip way for a girl to tell a boy that she likes him. The girls give their scrunchies to the boy of their choosing, and he proudly wears it on his wrist to show all.
So, Covington laughingly posted on her Facebook along with a photo of her scrunchie stash, “PSA to ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRL MOMS! Are you tired of wasting money on hair scrunchies? Feel like you’re buying them every week? Wondering why your daughter can’t keep up with them?”
“Well let me let you in on a little secret… They are being found in the dryer of every boy mom’s home,” Covington continued. “I’m about to start a lost and found page for them on Facebook or better yet return them to school with a love note for me.”
“Apparently, it’s cool to give your scrunchie to someone you think is cute, below is a stash that we have racked up just this week. So basically, stop wasting your money and clogging up my dryer,” she concluded, adding the funny hashtags “#SaveTheScrunchies”, “#IKnowHesCute” and “#BoyMomStruggles.”
Since Covington wrote on her Facebook, the post has gone viral with more than 35,000 likes and 45,000 shares and counting!
“Oh my goodness!! I thought I had girls sneaking over or something…they are everywhere!” one fellow parent exclaimed.
“This explains why I keep finding Claytons stuff with scrunchies,” another user commented.
“Girl, yes!!! Colt came home with 4 on his arm. I told him to give them back,” said another.
“You will forever be known as the Mom who took down the scrunchie comeback,” one of her followers teased.
Now, Covington told GMA that mothers everywhere are contacting her; the latest update on the scrunchie fiasco is that boys are expected to give up their hoodies in return for the scrunchies!
“It sounds harmless. But I guess if a boy likes a girl, he gives her his hoodie,” she claimed. “I told my son he better be careful ’cause I’m not buying him any new ones and it could be a very cold winter.”
