A Guide for the Updating Mother – This Is How Twitter Works

Twitter is an online social networking site. Basically, people post 140 character updates (tweets) of what is going on in their lives along with links to things they think are interesting, funny, or useful to their followers (“following” being essentially what “friending” is on other sites).

There are many uses for Twitter, some people use it as a newsfeed by following prominent people or news- networks, some as a private chat room by limiting their followers and whom they follow to close friends and family, and some as a microblog for updating people about the efforts they are doing and their personal lives.

Who is a twitter user? A Twitter user is in control of their profile. They choose to follow who they want to and they tweet on their profile whatever they want to. Your profile shows all the tweets you have made. You can have an unlimited number of followers however, you can choose who you want as your follower by making your account “private”.

Who sees what? So you might be wondering who sees your tweets. Anyone who follows you will see your tweets in their newsfeed section. The tweet will also be available on “me” section of your profile. If you do not follow a person and they reply to your tweet, it will come in your notifications.

Total strangers and you might not follow each other but can still mention each other in tweets. You can click the notifications and view what they have written. When the tweet starts with tagging a person, the tweet will be visible in newsfeed and notifications to those who follow each other. If there is no tag or username at the start, anyone can see the tweet.

Since mom and brother don’t follow cat, they will only be able to see the original tweet and not the replies. However, the replies can be seen in the tweet thread.

What are direct messages? A direct message is the only way to contact the person directly without anyone else reading or intervening in-between. The tweets you share in direct messages will not be available for anyone else to see.

What is re-tweet? Re-tweeting is when you like someone’s tweet and you want to share it. There are two options to do so. The direct tweet is posting the tweet directly. And quote tweet is when you can type a message above the original tweet.

How do hashtags work? Hashtags are a label used in tweets. Users can search the hashtag and find tweets on the similar topic. If a hashtag is used repeatedly by a number of the user the hashtag becomes a trend.

Twitter or Facebook? At Facebook, you become friends mutually. On the other hand at Twitter, you can be followed by thousands of people yet you can only choose to follow a few of them. Twitter is simple and allows to share an opinion on various topics.

It can be concluded that Twitter is a great platform to share your opinions with the world. Your voice will never remain unheard on twitter. It’s time for you to go to twitter and start tweeting.
