When any man is offered the chance to kiss Katy Perry, you assume they would say this. She’s one of the most interesting and charismatic characters in the music industry. Her quirky nature and comical personality mixed in with her dynamite sex appeal make her an obvious favorite for anyone who enjoys the mainstream. However, one guy proved that a peck on the lips from Perry was enough to cause an emotion you wouldn’t expect – discomfort.
When Benjamin Glaze, 19, stepped out onto the American Idol floor to impress the judges, things got carried away quickly. He was asked if he had “kissed a girl and liked it” by judge Luke Ryan, in reference to Perry’s hit I Kissed A Girl.
Glaze, though, gave a response you don’t expect to hear from a 19-year-old lad: “I have never been in a relationship and I can’t kiss a girl without being in a relationship.”
Perry Just Ruined It
The Oklahoma-born singer comes from a conservative background, where such frolicking before being with someone is frowned upon. Ever one to break taboo, though, Perry got up and told him to “come here right now.”
She asked him to give her a kiss on the cheek, and he responded with the kind of peck you give to your mustachioed auntie. When Perry, less than impressed asked him to come back in for a kiss the second time, she swung round and caught him clean on the lips. Glaze, shocked, literally falls on the floor and is heard saying “You didn’t!” while Perry celebrates with her fellow judges.
Over The Top
Of course, as is often the case today, social media was awash with indignation. People said that it was a poor show from the singer to put the fella in such a position – and we kind of agree. He comes from a background she kind of disrespected by being so brazen about it. As someone else mentioned, what if this was a 33-year-old male judge more or less coercing a 19-year-old female audition to do the same thing. There’d rightly be outrage.
That being said, I’m victim to the same double standard myself. I started this article talking about how most guys would love a kiss from Katy Perry. Still, you need to respect someone’ background and personality.
When asked about it himself, Glaze said that: “I wanted to save it for my first relationship, I wanted it to be special.”
He also made it clear that he would have rejected it from the off-set, had he known that the peck on the cheek would become a kiss on the lips.
“Would I have done it if she said, ‘Would you kiss me?’ No, I would have said no.”
“I know a lot of guys would be like, ‘Heck yeah!’ But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately.”
What’s your take on it? A bit of a laugh? Or something that portrays double standards?
