“Mama” June’s amazing transformation

The beginning.

37 year  old “Mama” June Shannon burst into our lives in 2009 when participating with her daughters, especially her youngest daughter Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson in the “Toddlers & Tiaras” reality show. The show ran for seven seasons before it was canceled. “Mama” June and Honey Boo Boo were so adorable that in 2012 a spin off series “Here comes Honey Boo Boo” that followed “Mama” June and her family’s life in Georgia was aired for 4 seasons. The show was cancelled in 2014 despite having filmed a fifth season. “Mama” June was naturally one of the key characters in the show together with her four daughters and life partner.

It appears, that in between series “Mama” June ‘s life hadn’t turned out just the way she expected them to be. When the lights turned off, ishe finds out that her life partner had been cheating on her and she was just plain un-happy and unchallenged.  tipping the scales at close to 400 pounds (181 kilograms) she was determined to turn her life around. And she did it the only way she knew how – in front of the cameras on a reality show called “From Not to Hot” that concluded May 2017.

The Tipping Point

The series begins with her detailing the turmoils she had endured since the last time she was the focus of our attention including her separation, her move to a new house and a better neighborhood in an attempt to give her daughters Honey Boo Boo and  Lauryn “Pumpkin” Shannon a better life. Unfortunately she finds out the hard way that her old life style and habits are catching up with her and she finds it physically difficult to unpack the family belongings and tidy her shiny new house. additionally, she discovers that these life habits are now trickling down to her daughters.

The tipping point in her life is finding out that her former life partner and father of her daughter is getting married and asks “Mama” June to attend with their daughter, combined with a failed date. She decides to “Not get angry get healthy” and begins to entertain the idea of the perfect revenge. To be hotter than the bride (in addition to her real concern about her health, a concern amplified after a visit to the doctor). A scheme I’m sure we can all relate to. And she had 44 weeks to do it.

The Journey

Her goal was to lose weight and fit into an American size 4. The method? A friend of hers bought her a dress and presented it as the goal dress. This was the dress she was going to her ex’s wedding in. The 400 pound “Mama” underwent $75,000 worth of plastic surgeries, including a tummy tuck and breast lift and towards the series finale she had a liposuction on her neck, arms and legs to remove excess skin. In addition the family changed their entire diet around. As expected from reality shows (and diets) follows her through her training and diet regime which naturally includes ups and downs and heart warming dramas (no spoilers!).

At the end of the series Mama June tips the scale at 160 pounds.
